Walter Sherwood, or “Jolly Wally” to most, was our grandfather – a true Alaskan character with a heart as big as the Kenai River. A friendly soul with a booming laugh, Walter had a way of making everyone feel like an old friend.
When he first arrived in Soldotna, the town was little more than a few cabins scattered along the riverbank. But he fell in love with a cozy fish camp on the Kenai, a place where salmon ran thick and the coffee was always brewing. Alongside his buddies, Bernie and Perch, he settled into Poacher’s Cove, spending his days fishing, laughing, and spinning tales at Smitty’s Salmon Safari.
We grew up right there on that old porch with him, watching boatloads of proud fishermen haul in king salmon that could weigh more than we did. In those days, the Kenai was known for its legendary kings, and we saw plenty of 70 or 80-pounders come to shore. Sadly, times changed, and the mighty king salmon faced overfishing pressures, which took a toll on their numbers. Recognizing the need to protect this incredible resource, we are committed to being good stewards of these waters and honoring the legacy of Alaska’s fisheries.
Inspired by those days spent by Walter’s side, we founded Jolly Wally’s in 2016, right in Poacher’s Cove. We offer top-notch fish processing, fair prices, and connections to the best charter captains on the Kenai so you, too, can fish these storied waters. For us, it’s not just about sharing the thrill of the catch – it’s about sharing it responsibly, in a way that teaches the importance of sustainability and respect for these natural resources. We want every visitor to walk away with a deeper appreciation for Alaska’s fish and waters, understanding that preservation is as much a part of fishing as the catch itself.
Jolly Wally’s is more than fish processing – it’s about sharing that Alaskan magic that Walter loved. Whether you’re here to process a catch, book a charter, or simply share a good fish tale, you’re always welcome. Fishing advice is on the house, but if you need someone to show you the secret spots, well, there’s a small fee for that!
